Why using a CDN?

Serious question.

The CDN is a useful web relay to improve the user experience of its site. Everything goes faster, and especially the first display, which reduces the strong frustration of a blank page for a visitor.

Though, all this is not free (or not really...)

A CDN has a variable cost of use, often reasonable, but also an implementation cost, often complex.

These two elements can be balanced with what they bring:

  • A better loading time translates quite quickly into an improvement in SEO, so more traffic
  • A better visitor experience often translates into a conversion rate increasing.

These two combined "mechanically" generate more sales for an e-commerce site, more advertising views for a media.

On the first case two interesting studies (and probably a little interested...)

Amazon (propriétaire de Cloudfront)
Akamai

Among the elements to take into account when deciding to deploy a CDN there is the volume of traffic (below 20k single visitor / month it is probably not essential) but especially the dispersion of traffic.

If you are currently working for Europe, or even for the world, you must think about your Romanian client and his mobile connection not necessarily perfect in his Carpathian Castle.
